It Is Personality That Matters

It Is Personality That Matters

What we want is to see the man who is harmoniously developed ......great in heart, great in mind,[great in deed]...We want the man whose heart feels intensely the miseries and sorrows of the world ....And [we want] the man who not only can feel but can find the meaning of things, who delves deeply into the heart of nature and understanding. [We want] the man who will not even stop there,    [but] who wants to work out [the feeling and meaning by actual deeds]. Such a combination of head, heart, and hand is what we want.(1)

You see what is happening all around us. The world is one of influence. Part of our energy is used up in the preservation of our own bodies. Beyond that, every particle of our energy is day and night being used in influencing others. Our bodies, our virtues, our intellect, and our spirituality, all these are continuously influencing others and so conversely, we are being influenced by them. This is going on all around us. Now, to take a concrete example. A man comes; you know he is very learned, his language is beautiful, and he speaks to you by the hour; but he does not make any impression. Another man comes, and he speaks an immense impression. Many of you have seen that. So it is evident that words alone cannot always produce an impression. Words, even thoughts, contribute only one-third of the influence in making an impression, the man, two-thirds. What you call the personal magnetism of the man-that is what goes out and impresses you.

In our families there are the heads; some of them are successful, others are not. Why? We complain of others in our families. The moment I am unsuccessful, I say, so-and-so is the cause of the failure. In failure, one does not like to confess one's own faults and weaknesses. Each person tries to hold himself faultless and lay the blame upon somebody or something else, or even on bad luck. When heads of families fail, they should ask themselves, why it is that some persons manage a family so well and others do not. Then you will find that the difference is owing to the man-his presence, his personality.

Coming to great leaders of mankind, we always find that it was the personality of the man that counted. Now, take all the great authors of the past, the great thinkers. Really speaking, how many thoughts have they thought? Take all the writings that have been left to us by the past leaders of mankind; take each one of their books and appraise them .The real thoughts, new and genuine, that have been thought in this world up to this time, amount to only a handful. Read in their books the thoughts they have left to us. The authors do not appear to be giants to us, and yet we know that they were great giants in their days. What made them so? Not simply the thoughts they thought, neither the books they wrote, nor the speeches they made, it was something else that is now gone, that is their personality. As  I have already remarked, the personality of the man is two-thirds, and his intellect, his words, are but one-third. It is the real man, the personality of the man, that runs through us. Our actions are but, effects. Actions must come when the man is there; the effect is bound to follow the cause.

The ideal of all education, all training, should be this man making. But instead of that, we are always trying to polish up the outside. What use in polishing up the outside when there is no inside? The end and aim of all training is to make the man grow. The man who influences , who throws his magic, as it were upon his fellow beings , is a dynamo of power, and when that man is ready, he can do anything and everything he likes; that personality put upon anything and everything he likes; that personality put upon anything will make it work.

Qualities for Personality Development

Some essential qualities for personality development:

Faith in oneself: Swamiji held faith in one's potential divinity as the sheet anchor of personality development. Faith in God came next only to faith in oneself. If one believes that one's real nature is the spirit - not the body or the mind- one would be a better individual with strong character.

Think Positive Thoughts: Swamiji decried, in no uncertain terms, weakness in human beings. Positive, wholesome thoughts based on our inherent divinity are essential for a strong character. 'Go on doing good, thinking holy thoughts continuously, that is the only way to suppress base impressions... Character is repeated habits and repeated habits alone can reform character.'Further, according to Swamiji, the only sin is to think of oneself and others as weak.

Attitude towards Failures and Mistakes: Swamiji advocated upholding the ideal once again even if a person failed a thousand times. He appreciated committing mistakes and learning from them rather than leading an inert existence like a wall, which cannot even tell a lie.

Self-Reliance: Man is the maker of his own destiny, said Swamiji: 'We are responsible for what we are, and whatever we wish ourselves to be, we have the power to make ourselves.'

Renunciation and Service: Swamiji held selfless service as a paramount means to character development. This, coupled with renunciation of selfishness and desire for the fruits of action, was considered by Swamiji as the twin ideal of our nation. 'Intensify her in those channels,' said he,' and the rest will take care of itself.'

Dimensions of Personality Development

Strengthening of will-power, the essence of personality development:

The divine core of our personality is covered, as it were, by five dimensions:

  • Physical dimension consisting of our body and senses.
  • Energy dimension which performs digestion of food, circulation of blood, respiration and other activities in the body.
  • Mental dimension characterized by the activities of the mind, like, thinking, feeling and emotions, etc.
  • Intellectual dimension characterized by the determinative faculty in a person. This is also the seat of discrimination and will-power.
  • Blissful dimension experienced as bliss during deep sleep.

Each succeeding dimension is subtler than the preceding one and pervades it.

Personality development implies progressive identification with higher dimensions of personality. Thus a person identified only with the physical dimension without exercising his higher mental faculties, lives not far different from animals, whose pleasure and pain are restricted to the sensory system.

Development involves struggle with one's lower mind characterized by desires, old habits, wrong tendencies, impulses and bad impressions The lesser we identify with the lower mind, and the more we identify with the higher mind, and exercise our buddhi (discrimination) the more developed will our personality be. This involves struggle to grapple with one's mind and its old habits, to cultivate new and wholesome ones. But this struggle is the greatest of all struggles in that it makes us civilized in the real sense of the term by manifesting our divinity and thereby our hidden perfection.

In other words, these dimensions can also be referred as the Panchakoshas namely:

  • Annamaya Kosha
  • Pranamaya Kosha
  • Manomaya Kosha
  • Vijnamaya Kosha
  • Anandmaya Kosha

Kali, the Mother

Kali the Mother is a poem written by Swami Vivekananda. Swamiji wrote the poem in 1898 when he was staying in Kashmir, on a houseboat, on Dal Lake in Srinagar.

The stars are blotted out,
The clouds are covering clouds,
It is darkness vibrant, sonant.
In the roaring, whirling wind
Are the souls of a million lunatics
Just loose from the prison-house,
Wrenching trees by the roots,
Sweeping all from the path.
The sea has joined the fray,
And swirls up mountain-waves,
To reach the pitchy sky.
The flash of lurid light
Reveals on every side
A thousand, thousand shades
Of Death begrimed and black —
Scattering plagues and sorrows,
Dancing mad with joy,
Come, Mother, come!
For Terror is Thy name,
Death is in Thy breath,
And every shaking step
Destroys a world for e’er.
Thou “Time”, the All-Destroyer!
Come, O Mother, come!
Who dares misery love,
And hug the form of Death,
Dance in Destruction’s dance,
To him the Mother comes.

Commemoration of the 125th Anniversary of Swami Vivekananda’s Chicago Addresses

It is a well known fact that 125 years ago on 11th September 1893, Swami Vivekananda proclaimed  India’s Spiritual, cultural and intellectual greatness at the World Parliament of Religions in Chicago.  His unflinching patriotism gave a new colour to the national movement throughout India and his heroic lectures are source of inspiration for the development of our nation in many fields, like arts, science, spirituality, etc.

Let us again hear the Historic Chicago Address and feel the import of the ideas.......

At the World's Parliament of Religions, Chicago
11th September, 1893

Sisters and Brothers of America,

It fills my heart with joy unspeakable to rise in response to the warm and cordial welcome which you have given us. I thank you in the name of the most ancient order of monks in the world ; I thank you in the name of the mother of religions ; and I thank you in the name of millions and millions of Hindu people of all classes and sects.

My thanks, also, to some of the speakers on this platform who, referring to the delegates from the orient, have told you that these men from far-off nations may well claim the honour of bearing to different lands the idea of toleration. I am proud to belong to a religion which has taught the world both tolerance and universal acceptance. We believe not only in universal toleration, but we accept all religions as true. I am proud to belong to a nation which has sheltered the persecuted and the refugees of all religions and all nations of the earth. I am proud to tell you that we have gathered in our bosom the purest remnant of the Israelites, who came to Southern India and took refuge with us in the very year in which their holy temple was sheltered to pieces by Roman tyranny. I am proud to belong to the religion which has sheltered and is still fostering the remnant of the grand Zoroastrian nation. I will quote to you, brethren, a few lines from a hymn which I remember to have repeated from my earliest boyhood, which is every day repeated by millions of human beings : "As the different streams having their sources in different places all mingle their water in the sea, so O Lord, the different paths which men take through different tendencies, various though they appear, crooked or straight, all lead to Thee."

The present convention, which is one of the august assemblies ever held, is in itself a vindication, a declaration to the world of the wonderful doctrine preached in the Gita ; "Whosoever comes to Me, through whatsoever form, I reach him ; all men are struggling through paths which in the end lead to me." Sectarianism, bigotry, and its horrible descendant, fanaticism, have long possessed this beautiful earth. They have filled the earth with violence, drenched it often and often with human blood, destroyed civilisation and sent whole nations to despair.Had it not been for these horrible demons, human society would be far more advanced than it is now. Bur their time is come ; and I fervently hope that the bell that tolled this morning in honour of this convention may be the death-knell of all fanaticism, of all persecutions with the sword or with the pen, and of all uncharitable feelings between persons wending their way to the same goal.

Personality Development: Central Message of Swami Vivekananda

What was the central message of Swami Vivekananda ?
Swami Vivekananda’s lectures, talks, letters, poems -his life’s work-is published in nine volumes entitled The complete Works of Swami Vivekananda. Is there any central message of Swamiji that runs through the pages of these nine volumes? Let us hear Swamiji himself: ’My ideal can be put into a few words and that is: to preach unto mankind their divinity, and how to make it manifest in every movement of life.’ Man’s inherent divinity was Swamiji’s central message. The following famous quotation of Swamiji can be our mantra for personality development: ‘Each soul is potentially divine. The goal is to manifest this divinity within by controlling nature, external and internal.’
Swamiji was never tired of rousing people to be conscious of their inherent divinity and perfection. He wanted this divinity to manifest in our day to day lives. In fact, he held this manifestation of divinity as the sole index of civilization of human-kind:
“A nation may conquer the waves, control the elements, develop the utilitarian problems of life seemingly to the utmost limits, and yet not realize that in the individual, the highest type of civilization is found in him who has learned to conquer self.”

“This universe is simply a gymnasium in which the soul is taking exercise; and after these exercises we become gods. So the value of everything is to be decided by how far it is a manifestation of God. Civilization is the manifestation of that divinity in man.”

This divinity in us is the repository of eternal existence, eternal knowledge and eternal bliss. The more it manifests, the more we experience abiding happiness and get supreme knowledge.

Adi Shankaracharya Jayanti

Adi Shankaracharya Jayanti is observed on Panchami Tithi during Shukla Paksha of Vaishakha month and usually falls between April and May. Adi Shankara was born in Kalady which is situated in Kerala, during 788 C.E. and he disappeared at young age of 32 in year 820 C.E. Shankaracharya consolidated the doctrine of Advaita Vedanata (अद्वैत वेदान्त) and revived it at a time when Hindu culture was on decline.

The main knowledge of Adi Shankara is only one thing, everything is perishable. Thoughts come and go, feelings come and go. One day everything disappears. But you are the light that stays forever".
Lets celebrate today's day by feeling immensely blessed, totally full of gratitude towards our master.

Adi ShankaraCharya, A great Saint and Philosopher........ May his Glory and Legacy keep alive Forever & Forever..........

Personality Development: What activates the body-mind system?

What activates the body-mind system?
This is an important question, the answer to which will help us have better knowledge of ourselves. This question engaged the attention of ancient Indian seers and sages. They experimented with themselves –their sensory and mental apparatus-and after a disciplined quest they found out that there is a divine element in human beings, which is the Mind of the mind, Eye of the eyes, Ear of the ears and Speech of the speech. It is this divinity which constitutes the real ‘I’ and the eternal element in our personality. This divinity survives physical dissolution of the body. This divinity remains latent in us as long as we identify ourselves with our body-mind and the sensory system. The goal of life, according to the scripture and the great ones, is to manifest this hidden divinity.

Personality Development: What is character?

What is character?
Every action and thought of ours leaves an impression in our mind. These impressions determine how we behave at a given moment, how we respond to a given situation. The sum total of all our impressions is what determines our character. The past has determined the present. Even so the present –our present thoughts and actions-will shape our future. This is a key principle governing personality development.

Swami Adbhutananda, Maharajji

Speaking about Latu Maharaj, Swami Vivekananda once said, “Latu is Sri Ramakrishna’s greatest miracle. Having absolutely no education, he has attained the highest wisdom simply by virtue of the Master’s touch”. Latu was the only disciple of Sri Ramakrishna who could not even read or write. He was born of very poor parents in a village in Bihar. He lost his parents in early boyhood. Poverty forced his uncle to take him to Kolkata where Latu was employed as a houseboy in the house of Ramachandra Datta, a close devotee of Sri Ramakrishna. The Master recognized the dormant spiritual potential in the boy and asked Ram to allow Latu to stay at Dakshineswar as an attendant. Under the guidance of the Master Latu practised intense sadhana, spending whole nights in meditation, a habit which he followed all through his life.
After Sri Ramakrishna’s passing, Latu joined Baranagar Math, and was ordained a sannyasin bearing the name Adbhutananda. He, however, spent most of his time in contemplation on the bank of the Ganga or in a room in Balaram Babu’s house.
Swami Vivekananda established Ramakrishna Mission on 1897 and Belur Math in 1898. Latu Maharaj with his deep absorption in contemplative life could neither take up the service activities of the Mission nor follow the discipline and routine of the monastery. So Swami Vivekananda permitted him to follow his own way of life. After some years Adbhutananda moved to Varanasi where he lived alone, but his needs were taken care of by the Ramakrishna Home of Service. At the end of a brief ailment he passed away in a meditative state on 24 April 1920.

Discourse on Swami Adbhutananda Jayanti would be on 6:30 pm at Holy Temple premises of Sri Ramakrishna Sevashrama, Lucknow. Please do come in large numbers......

Personality Development : More about the mind

The Katha Upanishad describes human personality with the help of a chariot allegory. ‘Our ‘I’ is represented by the master of the chariot; the body is the chariot and the buddhi the charioteer. The manas is represented by the reins to which are yoked the horses representing the sense organs-ears, skin, eyes, tongue and nose- which are the five windows in a human being that give him or her the knowledge of objects in the world. The road on which the chariot travels is represented by the sense objects. The human being who identifies himself or herself with this body-mind system is said to be the enjoyer of objects or the fruits of actions.

If the horses are not broken and the charioteer is asleep, the chariot cannot reach its destination. It can even overturn and spell the death of the master. Similarly, if the sense organs are not disciplined, and if the power of discrimination lies dormant, one cannot reach the goal of human life.

On the other hand, if the horses are broken and the charioteer is wide-awake, the chariot reaches its destination. Even so, if the buddhi is wide awake, and if the sensory system together with the mind is disciplined and controlled, a human being can reach the goal of his life. What is the goal? We will come to it shortly. Another important activity of the mind that concerns personality development is our emotions. More the emotions are under control, healthier becomes one’s personality. Emotions can be broadly classified into two types, viz attraction and repulsion. Love, admiration, aspiration, sympathy, joy, veneration, pride and the like indicate attraction. Hate, anger, fear, sorrow, jealousy, disgust, shame, etc, are of the nature of repulsion. As long as one is entangled with the undisciplined mind, one’s personality does not really develop. Buddhi, the charioteer, serves as an effective instrument of self-development by controlling the emotions and raising that higher self from the hold of the lower mind.

Swami Saradananda Sharat Maharajji

Premonastic name :
Sharat Chandra Chakravarty
Date of Birth : 23 December 1865
Place of Birth : Kolkata
Born in an affluent family, Sharat was always calm and quiet and pious in his boyhood. He joined the medical college with the idea of becoming a doctor, but discontinued his studies in order to serve Sri Ramakrishna. Along with his cousin Shashi (who stayed with Sharat’s family) he joined the Brahmo Samaj, and in 1883 they went together to Dakshineswar. Sri Ramakrishna drew them to him like a powerful magnet. During the Master’s last illness Sharat also, like Shashi, dedicated himself to serving the Master day and night.
After the Master’s passing, Sharat joined the Baranagar monastery and took the vows of sannyasa assuming the name Swami Saradananda. After spending a few years in pilgrimage and tapasya along with his brother monks, he returned to Baranagar Math in 1891. When Swami Vivekananda started extensive preaching work in the West, and felt the need for another brother monk to assist him, Swami Saradananda was brought to the United States in 1896. His calm and gentle disposition, courteous and loving manners and able exposition of Vedanta won him many friends and admirers in America.
But Swami Vivekananda, who founded the Ramakrishna Mission soon after his return to India in 1897, saw that a highly capable person like Saradananda was necessary to manage the affairs of the Math and the Mission. So Saradananda was called back to Kolkata and made the General Secretary of Ramakrishna Math and the Mission, a post which he held for nearly three decades till the end of his life. By his mature wisdom, clear thinking, strength of mind and devotion to Sri Ramakrishna and Holy Mother, he guided the course of the twin organizations in those formative years when political agitation against the British rule was gaining momentum in India.
Apart from his important work as General Secretary, Swami Saradananda is remembered for several other types of great service that he rendered. The first one was his taking over the Udbodhan, the Bengali journal of Ramakrishna Math and Mission, as its editor and publisher in 1902 when Swami Trigunatitananda left for America. The second one was taking upon himself the full responsibility of looking after the needs of the Holy Mother whether she stayed in Jayrambati or Kolkata. His third work was writing the monumental biography of Sri Ramakrishna known as Sri Ramakrishna Lila Prasanga in Bengali (translated later into English under the title Sri Ramakrishna the Great Master). His last great work was the construction of the temple dedicated to Holy Mother in 1921 on the spot where her sacred body was cremated in Belur Math, and another temple at Mother’s birthplace in Jayrambati in 1923.
He was loved and respected by hundreds of people. He was a great support especially to women. In the first week of August 1927 he suffered a stroke. Two weeks later on 19 August 1927, he breathed his last.

Swami Chetanananda “How to Live With God: In the Company of Ramakrishna”

In the early 1900s Swami Vishuddhananda met a gardener in the Dakshineswar temple garden, who had had a vision of the Master’s luminous form. The Swami wrote:
“I met a gardener of seventy-six or seventy-seven years old, who had worked in the temple garden during Mathur’s time. I first saw him cleaning, very carefully, the path from the Master’s room to the Panchavati with a spud [a spade-like instrument]. He was a little bent because of his age. I observed that he steadfastly cleaned that path up to the pine grove and the bel tree. I was a little curious, because I saw him do the same work every day. One day I asked him: “Have you seen the Master?” He laid the spud on the ground, then looked at me in wonder and said: “I am following his order. The Master told me that many of his devotees would come. So I am cleaning this path for them”. He was reluctant to say anything more. When I pressed him to say something more, he told me this wonderful story: “One summer night I could not sleep, so I went for a walk in the garden. I saw a light coming from the Panchamundi area. I went there and found the Master immersed in Samadhi under the bel tree; a light emanated from his body. I was so scared, I could not stay there long. The next morning I went to him, fell at his feet, and burst into tears. He asked: “What is the matter? Why do you have so much overflowing devotion today?” I only said: “Master, please bless me”. He realized what was in my mind. He lifted me up and said: “Meditate on the form that you saw last night. Clean the path to the Panchavati. Many devotees will come in the future”. I meditate on that luminous form of the Master and clean this path every day”.
